PRO TIP: DINK FOREHAND
Most players dink off their backhand and they bend their elbows so much that they connect with the ball too late, says coach Sarah Ansboury, director of pickleball instruction at Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head, SC. Instead, hit more forehand shots. Having your paddle in front of you, and making contact with the ball above your knees in a forward position, will set you up for dinking success.
PICKLEBALL BOOSTS BRAIN POWER
Pickleball may be as healthy for your brain as it is for your body. According to a recent study, the addictive nature of the sport is linked to the socializing benefits we get from it. Pickleball gives players a sense of community and family, and that connection can be extremely valuable for their mental health. Research shows that socializing can help keep the brain sharp by improving memory and cognitive function. So schedule some court time—it’s good for you!
A BETTER SWING STARTS HERE
For power and control when you hit the ball, you need your arm muscles to be fired up and ready. That includes your shoulders, which are key to a strong swing. Try this quick and simple stretch from Pilates instructor Ashley Patten, who works with devoted pickleball player Katie Couric, to mobilize your shoulders so that your muscles will perform better. Do it as part of your pre-game prep and watch your swing strengthen.
THE COOLEST NEW COURTS
As the number of people playing pickleball continues to grow, more and more indoor pickleball courts with unique features and offerings are springing up across the country. Here are two exciting new destinations to check out:
Pickle Haus, Algonquin, IL
This 41,000 square-foot state-of-the-art pickleball facility and entertainment venue outside Chicago recently opened with 12 indoor pickleball courts, a restaurant, a bar, golf simulators, and an event space. Book a court, take a lesson, or join an open play session.
The Hub Alameda, Alameda, CA
Feel a sense of history when you play on one of the eight indoor pickleball courts in the former Alameda Naval Air Station, which was once one of the largest military plane repair facilities in the country. Check out the unlimited open play, join a league, or take a lesson. Seven outdoor pickleball courts and a bar and grill are slated to open here next year.
